Task: For 1 week, keep track of how long you sleep.

Challenges:
~ Find your nightly sleep average (# hours slept in 1 week divided by 7)
~ Figure out how much time you spend sleeping in the winter months.

Facts: In order to survive the winter, some animals hibernate.  Thier bodies slow donw to the point where their heartbeat may only beat 2 or 3 times a minute, & the breathing drops as well.  Bats, chipmunks, & other ground squirrels are examples of true hibernatiors.  These animals cannot be easily woken up.  Male lions often sleep 22 hours a day.

Task: Find out how many miles your family car has traveled, & the age of the car.

Challenges:
~ Estimate the distance you travel in 1 day.
~ Round your car's mileage to the nearest thousand.
~ Find the average number of miles driven each year.
~ What travels further, your car or an Arctic tern?

Facts
: Some animals travel incredible distances.  Arctic terns migrate 24,000 miles each year, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, & back.  With long wings for their body size, Arctic terns are great flyers.  Gray whales travel 26,000 miles a year.  This translates into 115 miles a day.  Monarch butterflies travel 50 - 100 miles a day during their migration to Mexico.
