Class of 2008
These masterful magicians worked hard in everything they did! They truly enjoyed all of the work we did in Reader's / Writer's Workshop, Math Workshop, & Inquiry Workshop. Especially if they were involved in a project or using some kind of technology. Click on the links below to take a peek at their masterpieces.
It Takes a Village to Raise a Playground
In the fall Broad Brook Elementary School had a new playground installed. Well, the construction was happening right outside our window, so we became increasingly curious about everything that was occuring out there. So we dug in to see just what it takes to install a plaground. In order for us to do this, we had to learn how to interview so that we could ask the construction workers procedural questions. We also learned how to create scale models using area & perimeter. We had our stumbling blocks, but we always did our best!
Poetry Slam
We did a thorough study of Poetry. In our quest we discovered similes, metaphors, onomotopeia, alliteration, refrains, & much more. To celebrate we held a Poetry Slam. We invited our friends & family for breakfast & performed for them. We shared some of our favorite poems by poets such as Robert Frost. We sang some of our favorite School House Rocks songs Conjunction Junction & The Tale of Mr. Morton, & lastly we shared a few of our own poems. It was a huge success, & everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
19th Century American Art
We delved into American History by emerging ourselves into the 19th century. We not only read numerous informational texts about the time period, but we also dived into Historical Fiction & Art representing the same time period. After reading the Historical Fiction books, we created Tunnel Books to show the elements of the story. We participated in an art WebQuest to learn more about geometric properties & the time period. We then used this knowledge to create geometric art that represented a topic of interest. This by far was our favorite project because of all of the choices that we had, & were able to make.
Wax Museum
This was yet another one of our favorites! We read numerous biographies on people that interested us. We summarized what we read, dressed up as the person, & became a museum exhibit. As part of our exhibit we also used our knowledge of Electricity & Magnets to create "buzzers." We could not share our knowledge until viewers turned the switch on. We also used this time to display our artwork from the 19th Century.

Hershey Assembly Line
We toured the U.S. Regions. 1st we started with the Northeast with Becky as our tour guide. Becky took us to many places such as Niagra Falls, Clam Digging, on a Freight Ship, Plymouth Plantation, & more. One of our favorite places that Becky took us was to Hershey, PA so that we could see how an assembly line works. It was quite fascinating to be an assembly line worker, wrapping "chocolates" for the day. One of the things that we enjoyed the most was getting paid with Hershey Kisses!
Author's Day
Broad Brook Elementary School celebrates writers every year. For this particular Author's Day we had an E-Comic & 2 Pod Casts.
